Move in a Week Without Losing Your Mind
A short-notice move plan for when you only have seven days. Triage, pack fast, skip the perfect.
- Step 1
Book the truck or movers first, today
With a week's notice, availability is your hardest constraint, not packing. Call before you do anything else. If full-service movers are booked, get a truck and a couple of friends lined up the same hour. Lock the logistics, then everything else fits around them.
- Step 2
Pack by room, not by category
When time is short, do not sort by 'all books' or 'all kitchen.' Empty one room completely into boxes, label it, close the door, move on. A finished room is a morale win and a clean way to track progress when you have no time to think.
- Step 3
Use the 'open first' box rule
Pack one clearly marked box per person with two days of clothes, chargers, meds, toilet paper, and snacks. In a rushed move you will not unpack for days, and this single box keeps you functional while everything else stays sealed.
- Step 4
Skip the deep clean, document instead
If you are a renter with no time, a fast wipe-down plus thorough move-out photos protects your deposit better than a half-finished deep clean you ran out of time for. Photograph every room empty, timestamp it, and email it to yourself.
- Step 5
Forward your mail and call it done
You will not update every account in a week. File the USPS change of address so nothing important gets lost, and handle the rest from the new place over the following month. Done beats perfect when the clock is against you.
