Utility Transfer
Scheduling shutoff of services at your old home and turn-on at the new one around your move date.
A utility transfer is the coordinated scheduling of your essential services, electricity, water, gas, internet, and trash, so they shut off at your old address and turn on at your new one around your move date. Done right, you never have a dark, cold, or offline night.
Each utility has its own lead time. Internet is the worst offender, often requiring an appointment booked a week or more ahead and sometimes an in-person technician visit. Power, water, and gas are usually faster but can still need a day or two, and some require a deposit or identity verification for a new account.
Schedule old-home shutoffs for the day after your move (not the day of, in case the move runs long) and new-home turn-ons for the day before move-in or the morning of. Record meter readings at both ends so your final and first bills are accurate, and confirm each connection is actually live on day one rather than assuming it worked.
