Open-First Box

A clearly labeled box of immediate essentials you unpack before anything else at the new home.

An open-first box (sometimes called a survival box) holds the things you need within hours of arriving, before you have the energy or time to unpack anything else. Typical contents: toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, phone chargers, basic tools, box cutter, snacks, water, trash bags, and a change of clothes. The point is that unpacking takes days, and the first night in a new home is exhausting. Without an open-first box, you end up digging through twenty sealed boxes at 11pm looking for toilet paper or a screwdriver to assemble a bed. With one, the first night is livable. Label it boldly and load it last so it comes off the truck first, or better, carry it in your own car so it never gets buried. Some people pack one open-first box per room: kitchen, bathroom, primary bedroom. It is the single packing habit that most reduces first-night misery.
